Gearbox Software has finally announced a definitive release date for it’s upcoming shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines.

The game is a spiritual sequel to James Cameron’s 1986 classic sci-fi/horror movie Aliens and will release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC worldwide on February 12, 2013. A release date for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console will be announced at a later time.

The news was accompanied by a new trailer for the game, which you can see below.

In a letter to fans, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford detailed the long road of development and said the team had a dream to make a game based around, on specificially on, the Alien movie series;

“Our vision has been to create a video game sequel to the original Alien trilogy.” he said. “Our vision is for the game to be fully featured with an exciting, suspenseful, thrilling and action packed narrative campaign that can be played alone or cooperatively combined with a robust competitive game where human players can take on the roles of Colonial Marines or Xenomorphs and do battle online. The game must be authentic.

“It must complement, but not re-tell the events of, the films. It must deliver an original story and fresh experience that, for those of us who grew up loving the Aliens films, builds and expands upon those events, but also stand on its own for those of us who may never have seen the movies.”

The game is being published by SEGA and will be shown off in detail at this year’s E3 expo which kicks off on June 5. Head to our E3 2012 Coverage Portal to keep up to date!
