This May, we will get the chance to watch the sequel to the much loved Star Trek reboot, “Star Trek Into Darkness”.
Just one month before that, Star Trek: The Video Game will be released, serving as a link between the two movies.
Star Trek is no stranger to video games of all kinds, from Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator arcade machine, to online games like Star Trek: Against All Odds on Ladbrokes, and 74 commercial video games in between since 1971.
So just what do we know about the latest game so far? Read on to find out!
Star Trek will be released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and for Windows PC.
Star Trek is being handled by Digital Extremes, who have worked on various Unreal games, the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock and The Darkness II. It is being published by Namco Bandai games.
In a recent interview, Sheldon Carter (creative director of Digital Extremes) said the game is “like someone spliced Metroid Prime into my Uncharted.
The game follows the exploits of Kirk and Spock between the first Star Trek movie and its sequel, “Star Trek Into Darkness”. Kirk plays like a standard shooter, equipped with Phaser, while Spock gets the stealth route, utilising freeze rays and his Vulcan nerve pinch.
A lot of work has been done to secure top-notch talent to work on the game. The game supports 3D, which is always nice. Digital Extremes also managed to secure both the likenesses and voices of all the cast of the first movie, so ultimate continuity can be preserved between movies.
The game has been penned by God of War II writer Marianne Krawczyk in conjunction with the writers of the films. At E3 in 2012, it was revealed that the Gorn will serve as the enemies of the game.
While it’s unconfirmed for Australia thus far, American pre-orderers are getting an “Elite Officer Pack”. This includes:
- Stealth Pack – Stealth uniforms for both Kirk and Spock, with Starfleet Type IV Stealth Sniper Rifle.
- Brawler Pack – A nifty leather jacket for Kirk and a Vulcan Science Academy outfit for Spock.
- Kelvin Pack – U.S.S. Kelvin uniforms for Kirk and Spock, with U.S.S. Kelvin Phaser.
- Academy Pack – Academy uniform for Kirk, Officer Dress Uniform for Spock, with Academy Phaser.
- Kobayashi Maru Pack – Kobayashi Maru uniforms for both Kirk and Spock.
Star Trek: The Game is set to hit PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles on April 23, 2012.
If the same amount of effort goes into creating the game as it was securing all the movie cast and top-notch story-writers and developers, this game will be set to be a classic 2013, and one of the best licensed games in a long time.
Of course, Aussie-Gamer will bring you any more information on the game as it comes to light!
