Two new Pokemon games for the Nintendo DS were launched over the weekend in Japan, and sales numbers are already suggesting the games are set to do pretty well.

Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2, which were released on Saturday, have sold over 1.6 million copies in it’s “first week” on sale (that whole week was just Saturday and Sunday). The previous Pokemon record was held by it’s predecessors, Pokemon Black and White which sold 2.6 million copies in its first two days on sale.

Before the sale, retailers reported that over 1 million copies of the new Pokemon games had already been pre-ordered. The games were designed for Nintendo DS, but users with the newer Nintendo 3DS system will be able to use extra features will applications purchased from that system’s eShop.

Pokemon Black and White 2 will launch in Australia sometime this Spring.
