Nintendo 3DS owners will be prompted to update their consoles today when trying to access the eShop. The update, once downloaded, adds new features to the device.

The firmware update enables 3D Video recording via the console’s Photo application, adds a new level in the Mii StreetPass Plaza RPG game, and expands the eShop to allow video game add ons and game demos.

Also, the console will receive new software automatically while it’s in sleep mode. This will include new applications and game demos. The eShop will also support download codes, and some functions have been improved such as the QR Code reading.

Some users have experienced slow downloads and time outs, but these will probably be corrected over time as is usually the case. We’ve noticed the update is quicker if you put your console in sleep mode.
