Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata in Japan today announced that the company’s newest handheld console, the Nintendo 3DS, has surpasses 5 million units in Japan alone.
This makes the Nintendo 3DS one of Nintendo’s fastest selling handheld consoles, as the system has sold 500,000 more units in less time than the previous record holder, the GameBoy Advance. That console took 58 weeks to hit the 5 Million mark in Japan, versus Nintendo 3DS’ 52 weeks.
It’s also outselling the Nintendo DS’ speed. The original DS had only sold 4 Million consoles in Japan in the same amount of time. For reference, the Nintendo DS went on to sell over 160 Million units worldwide.
It seems all that doom and gloom of last year is officially behind Nintendo with these numbers, Iwata underlined the company’s commitment to spread further with the Nintendo 3DS with upcoming software titles being prepared.
