Nintendo launched a global assault overnight that seemed to overshadow Sony’s PlayStation Vita launch which happened worldwide at the same time.
Nintendo took to the web to announce some plans for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii consoles in the immediate future. While most of the announcements were Japan-centric, Nintendo of America pleased thousands of fans by confirming RPG The Last Story will launch in the region this year.
Other details were confirmed for Mario Tennis Open on Nintendo 3DS. The title is the first in the Mario Tennis series that allows online multiplayer and will feature a global leader board. Up to four players can play together in local multiplayer using just one game cartridge, and gyro controls will open a unique gameplay style.
Fire Emblem was shown off with new plans for extensive downloadable content. While the game can be enjoyed completely by itself, Nintendo will be offering new maps and new story lines for paid download. In Japan, these download packs will be offered free for a limited time.
An exciting collaboration was announced between SEGA, Capcom and Namco Bandai. Nintendo teased this as “mysterious” and “unpredictable”, leaving fans in wonder and awe. The game will be published by Namco Bandai and will be a Nintendo 3DS exclusive.
The company also surprised fans worldwide with the immediate released of Dillon’s Rollin’ Western, a unique tower defence title available on eShop. And if that wasn’t enough to take some attention away from the PlayStation Vita launch, Zelda producer Eiji Anouma personally messaged owners of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D via Nintendo Mail Box where he alluded to new Zelda games and sent a new stationary for the application.
Finally, Professor Kawashima from the Brain Training series is returning to Nintendo for another game after 6 years. The game will focus on “working memory” and “concentration”, aiming to improve people’s ability to stop thinking about what else is going on, a problem brought on by the increase of internet devices, and help them concentrate at the task at hand.
Glaringly absent was news of the Nintendo Wii U, but that information is expected to be announced at E3 this year.
