Nintendo will make some new announcements tomorrow concerning the future of the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS game consoles.
The announcement will take place via internet broadcast on USTREAM, the same method last year’s Nintendo 3DS announcements were largely made. The Nintendo Direct stream will be delivered by Nintendo’s CEO, Satoru Iwata from the Kyoto headquarters from 10pm Australian Eastern time (8pm Japan time).
While it’s unclear exactly what the president will announce, we think it’s safe to speculate that he will show the first glimpse of the new 2D Super Mario game that was teased at an investors briefing last month.
Other games that are likely to be shown are Luigi’s Mansion, Animal Crossing and potentially Paper Mario – all of which have been announced for 3DS over the last year without any concrete release date. So called Pokemon Grey is also a possibility, however remote.
As for Wii titles, this remains a true mystery as Wii’s lifecycle is wrapping up nicely this year and Nintendo have not announced any titles for the console since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Kirby Wii last November and December respectively. Wii was, however, specifically mentioned on the teaser site for the event.
The timing for the announcement is prime, as Nintendo announced just the yesterday that Nintendo 3DS, the company’s latest handheld console, had become the fastest selling console of all time in Japan, knocking out the previous record breaker, the comapny’s own GameBoy Advance.
Nintendo will launch a brand new home console this year called Wii U. The Wii U console will display high definition graphics and has a touch screen controller that can be used in unique ways. It will also allow users to play video games without a television on supported titles.
