Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have thrown a curve PokeBall today with the announcement that hit Pokemon titles Black and White for Nintendo DS will be getting sequels.

Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 are the two new Pokemon games announced for Nintendo DS and will be hitting stores in Japan as early as June 2012. This is the first time in Pokemon game history that a ‘version’ of the game will be getting a sequel; traditionally, Pokemon games come in pairs, with a third ‘spin-off’ title that follows a couple of years later generally with enhancements.

Not much more information was revealed on the new titles other than Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to use extra features, presumably due to those consoles’ built in cameras. Additionally, two new forms for the Pokemon character Kyurem were announced for the games; Black Kyurem and White Kyurem.

While the Nintendo DS is stepping aside for it’s baby brother 3DS, Nintendo’s plan to release the game on the ageing platform is not as crazy as it may seem at first. For starters, the Nintendo 3DS is backwards compatible with Nintendo DS games. Also, Nintendo DS is the second best selling console of all time, and the most popular handheld video game console ever made with over 155 Million systems sold; 7 times the population of Australia.

We’ll keep you posted on the developments of what could be the biggest games in Nintendo DS history.
