According to Nintendo, New Super Mario Bros. 2 players have collected a global total of a whopping 300 Billion coins! Well done everyone!
To mark this outstanding achievement Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has hosted a surprise ‘Chotto’ Nintendo Direct in Japan announcing a new download course pack for New Super Mario Bros.2 ‘s Coin Rush mode.
Entitled the ‘Golden Classic Course Pack’ it will include 5 reimagined levels from the original Super Mario Bros. (levels 1-1, 1-2 and 1-4) as well as Super Mario Bros. 3 (levels 1-1 and 1-5). Each level will be of course packed in with additional secrets befitting Coin Rush.
What’s more, Iwata-San revealed that this 5 level course pack will be free for players to download until January 31, 2013. After which the price will be set to 200 Yen.
Which brings us to the sad news. At time of writing this pack hasn’t been confirmed for Western countries, including Australia. However if history proves to repeat itself we should see it made available to us by the week’s end (when we’ll all no doubt be enjoying our shiny new Wii U’s).
Aussie-Gamer is betting we’ll see a North America and/or Europe announcement pop-up overnight, so be sure to check back often as we’ll let you guys know as soon as it breaks.

Since we originally ran this article, Aussie-Gamer has confirmed this new DLC is available right now in Australia.
Simply turn your Nintendo 3DS on, boot up New Super Mario Bros. 2 and click on the ‘shop’ section in Coin Rush mode. You’ll be promoted to update the game after which you can then download the ‘Gold Classics Pack’ for free!
