Following yesterday’s system update, Nintendo have flipped the switch and made the Wii U Virtual Console available to North American users.
Those in Australia and Europe wondering when they’ll get access to the anticipated download service will need to wait just a little while longer, as the Virtual Console is due to go live April 27 (or late Saturday night/Sunday morning for Australians)
The launch line-up for the North American Virtual Console include;
- Super Mario World
- Donkey Kong Jr.
- Ice Climbers
- Punch Out!!
- Kirby’s Adventure
- Ballon Flight
The last four games have recently seen release thanks to Nintendo’s ongoing 30th anniversary sale, which will continue for the next few months with the launch of Super Metroid, Mario & Yoshi and Donkey Kong – all at the reduced price currently being offered to previous campaign games.
Once the Virtual Console goes live across Europe and Australia, the line-up above will be more or less the same, though with the omission of Kirby’s Adventure and Ballon Flight. In their place will be Mario’s Super Picross which won’t be available in North America just yet.
So if you missed out on Ballon Flight then you’ll need to sit tight and wait for Nintendo to re-release it in the PAL region, or if you haven’t bought Kirby’s Adventure for the current asking price of a mere 30 cents I recommend you go do that right now.
As to why these two games have been omitted from the Virtual Console in Europe, we can only guess it’s result from the backlash Nintendo received releasing 50Hz versions, whereas in North America they were emulated in 60Hz.
As we’re unable to substantiate this is indeed the reason, I guess we need to look at it in a ‘glass is half full’ way, and enjoy getting an entirely new game rather than two previous released ones.
Are you excited to finally have access to the Virtual Console on Wii U? Which title are you going to download first?
